Welcome to the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre’s Archives

We are pleased to launch the MNFC Archive Website and plant the seed for future collections of archival materials relating to the ancient presence of the Mi’kmaq within this landscape Mi’kma’ki. Our vision is to let people hear and learn the long and often unacknowledged history of our people whose history and culture were passed down orally through stories and songs, as well as through dances and many other artistic forms. These archives allow for people to hear the language and songs of this land, see the dances, and gain first-hand knowledge of the experience of those who have always called this land their home.

As a Friendship Centre, we also welcome the stories of many other Indigenous peoples who have found their home and community with us here in Kjipuktuk.  When Dr. Trudy Sable and I first discussed the donation of her collection for the initial development of the archives, the potential to include much more was obvious. We are aware that there are many people who have collections of photos, letters, documents, newspaper clippings, or recorded oral histories stored in various media.  We would like to invite you to archive them with us, pending appropriate approval and ethical guidelines. Though many items may seem insignificant, each piece adds to a story, much like a long missing piece of a puzzle.

Contained within this website are contacts for discussing donations you may like to make to the archives, as well as the protocols you would follow for donating them. Our website is public in our efforts to make this beautiful resource accessible to our communities and to the world.
